The number of casualties caused by gas attacks throughout the war were high, yet while there were large numbers of casualties the number of deaths was relatively small. Deaths from gas attacks were common in the begging part of the war. Later on in the war the element of surprise used when attacking with gas had been lost and casualties and therefore deaths took a big drop. Once the war was past May of 1915 deaths by gas were very rare. From May 1915 to the end of the war gas casualties only accounted for a mere 9% of all the casualties experienced by the British. Of these casualties only 3% ended up being fatal. Although gas didn't kill proficiently of the people who came it contact with it, it did leave most people with dibilatating symptoms they had to deal with for the rest of their lives. These symptoms could lead to trouble finding employment for soldiers after the war.[1]
Below is a chart that shows total number of casualties per country and how many of those casualties were deaths. The Central Powers are represented in red and the Allies are in blue and other smaller countries for both sides are represented in green. As the chart shows Russia suffered the most loses by far over any other country, they have over twice the number of casualties than did Germany the second most effected country. Also the Russian ratio of number of casualties to deaths is much higher than any other country.[1]
